An adventure in Game Development - Part One

One of those skills that has always seems magical to me is the development of Video Games. In teaching my children to code this is a skill I'm being forced to develop in order to maintain their interest. This started with a light foray into Scratch, the results of which can be seen here.

I bought our eight year old a book which he worked through and he has been making games in Scratch since. Since our four year old can't read, he has been working with her to develop her ideas in to functioning animations and games as well. They are hooked.

I found Scratch rather limiting for my abilities and wanted more. I have tons of software for creating games and game assets but I have never taken the time to learn to use them properly. Around this time Humble Bundle (http://www.humblebundle.com) launched a bundle to purchase ClickTeam Fusion 2.5.

This is still a rather simple program, but far more powerful than Scratch. This is where our journey begins. I will be documenting my evolution from novice to slightly less novice in upcoming posts. Some of it will be my work, some of it that of my family as I try to engage them in something we can do together and enjoy together. The focus will be on Game Development however there will be offshoots into associated areas, such as my first blog, monetizing your creations, and other aspects related to this endeavor.

The next post will talk about Stackem. Our first simple game, our entry point into development with Fusion 2.5. If you'd like to take a peak at the current state of the project please visit http://www.parxmedia.com/app/Stackem/.
